Manchester United Football Club is steeped in history dating back to 1878 after a department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway established Newton Heath LYR FC. Their players first ran out against other departments and railway companies in green and gold colours. In 1902 the club received a winding up order after running up excessive debts. After being rescued by local businessmen it changed its name to Manchester United Football Club.
The club is now world famous. However, the business is much more than the 75,000 matchday audience. The business now generates annual revenues of £581million. This growth has been driven over recent years by ballooning pay TV audiences, strong commercial partnerships alongside cup wins.
Should you add the UK’s most successful club to your investment portfolio?
As with any investment there are many points to consider and CSS Investments analyst Ravi Lockyer has produced an in-depth appraisal of the business.
